Dr. John W. Willhide grew up and attended high school in Roanoke, Va. He attended the University of Virginia on an academic scholarship. He played football and lacrosse at U. Va. and was active in campus life. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Social Fraternity and was President in his senior year.
Dr. Willhide graduated from The School of Dentistry of The Medical College of Virginia. He then served in The Dental Corps of The United States Army during the Cold War and Vietnam era. During this service time Dr. Willhide rotated through specialty programs in periodontics, oral surgery, endodontics, and prosthodontics.
He was honorably discharged as a Major.
Dr. Willhide came to Fredericksburg and opened his practice. In addition to private practice he is on the active staff at Mary Washington Hospital. He has served as President of the Rappahannock Dental Society and of The Northern Virginia Dental Society. He serves on several committees of the Virginia Dental Association. He was a founding member and board member of ADRP, a national organization which with the American Dental Association has been dedicated to the promotion of Dental Reimbursement Plans, providing the patient no usual and customary restrictions and choice in choosing their dentist.
Dr. Willhide is a Fellow of the Virginia Dental Association, The American College of Dentists, The International College of Dentists and The Pierre Fauchard Academy.
He has twice been to Honduras on dental missions to treat children in an orphanage and was instrumental in establishing a clinic for indigent patients in Northern Virginia.
Dr. Willhide has been active in civic affairs in Fredericksburg. He has served as President and member of the Board of Directors of Historic Fredericksburg Foundation and as chairman of the Fredericksburg Architectural Review board. He is a member of the Fredericksburg Area Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Willhide attends and has been a member of the Vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church. He is a lay Eucharistic Minister in the Episcopal Church.
Dr. Willhide has been married to the former Frieda Collins of Rock Island, Il. for 28 years. They have six children, all grown, college educated and "neat".
